Save Lives and Keep Your Soul!
Russ Reina’s non-fiction release, Moments in the Death of a Flesh Mechanic…a healer’s rebirth, is a brutally honest and haunting reflection of his challenging career as one of the first Mobile Intensive Care Unit Paramedics in the US.
Initially, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was unstable. Paramedics had to push for improved services and working conditions. Russ was an agitator who crafted the California Paramedic’s Association, the first AFL-CIO Union affiliated with EMS professionals. After 12 years, he burned out on the politics, not the work.
Russ’ EMS experience became a metaphor for the struggle between head and heart; a challenge many healthcare professionals face. He recounts his journey to encourage others in the healing arts to expand their support of each other; to break the “code of silence” about sharing things that rock their world on moral, emotional, psychic and spiritual grounds. Here are reflections on life and death to which all healers can relate.
Russ has been immersed in the healing arts since 1969. He currently lives on Maui where he continues to build his body of work in writing, counseling, music and workshops. His broader work can be found at www.firetender.org.
